Wilma Mankiller --First woman elected to serve as Chief of the Cherokee Nation

Wilma Pearl Mankiller (November 18, 1945 - April 6, 2010) was a pioneering Native American leader and activist who became the first woman elected to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Wilma Mankiller's leadership focused on improving the lives of Cherokee people through economic development, healthcare, and education initiatives. Her autobiography, "Mankiller: A Chief and Her People," was published in 1993.
