The Birth of Clinicians of Color

The Birth of Clinicians of Color

The need for diversity, inclusivity, and representation in mental health has never been more critical. This realization sparked the inception of Clinicians of Color (CoC), a platform dedicated to empowering therapists of color and ensuring equitable mental health services for all. At the heart of this initiative are two dedicated leaders: Lisa Savage and Kim Knight. Their shared passion for mental health and commitment to fostering a supportive community for clinicians of color led to the creation of CoC, a vibrant and dynamic organization.

The Leaders Behind CoC

Lisa Savage, a seasoned mental health professional, has always been driven by a profound desire to address the disparities in mental health services for communities of color. Her extensive experience in the field highlighted the glaring need for a platform where clinicians of color could connect, share resources, and grow professionally. Lisa aimed to create a community that not only supports its members but also advocates for the mental well-being of underserved populations.

Kim Knight, with her background in clinical practice and her passion for community building, brought a complementary perspective to the table. Kim recognized the isolation many clinicians of color face in predominantly white professional spaces and sought to create a network that fosters collaboration, mentorship, and mutual support. Her commitment to empowering fellow therapists and enhancing their professional development was instrumental in shaping the mission and values of CoC.

The Birth of Clinicians of Color

The journey of CoC began with a series of conversations between Lisa and Kim, where they shared their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. These discussions laid the groundwork for what would become a groundbreaking platform. They envisioned a space where clinicians of color could find the support, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive in their careers.

In 2018, Clinicians of Color was officially launched, marking the beginning of a new era in the mental health field. The organization's primary goal was to address the unique needs of therapists of color and to ensure that communities of color receive culturally competent and compassionate care.

Our Mission and Values

At Clinicians of Color, our mission is to create a supportive, inclusive, and empowering community for therapists of color. We believe that representation matters, and we strive to amplify the voices and contributions of clinicians who have historically been marginalized. Our core values include:

  • Professional Development: We provide opportunities for continuous learning and growth through workshops, training sessions, and peer consultations.
  • Advocacy: We advocate for policies and practices that promote equity in mental health services and support the professional needs of clinicians of color.

Our Programs and Offerings

Since its inception, CoC has grown into a thriving community with a wide range of programs and offerings designed to support our members. Some of our key initiatives include:

  • The CoC Academy: A comprehensive platform offering training sessions, webinars, and workshops on various topics relevant to clinicians of color. From self-care sessions to specialized training on domestic violence and diversity, the academy provides valuable resources for professional growth.
  • Business Consultation and Support: Led by Lisa Savage, our business consultation sessions offer personalized guidance to help therapists navigate the challenges of running a private practice or mental health organization.
  • Peer Consultation Groups: Facilitated by experienced clinicians like Kim Knight, these groups provide a space for therapists to discuss clinical issues, share insights, and receive feedback from their peers.
  • Exclusive Events and Retreats: We organize events and retreats that allow our members to connect, recharge, and rejuvenate in a supportive environment.

Our Online Store: The CoCo Shop

In addition to our programs and events, we have launched The CoCo Shop (www.thecocoashop.com), an online store featuring a curated selection of items that celebrate our community's values and support our mission. The store offers a variety of products, including apparel, accessories, and educational materials. Each purchase helps further our cause, with a portion of the proceeds reinvested into our initiatives and outreach programs. By shopping at The CoCo Shop, you not only get high-quality items but also contribute to a greater movement for change and empowerment.
